Umzinto too strong for Quins

Quins lost its 50 over a side promotion league match against Umzinto by 42 runs.

ALL Harlequins’ Cricket Club’s matches were cancelled by the eThekwini Cricket Union on Friday due to rain.

Harlequins Cricket Club, however, played a 50 over a side KZNCU promotion league match at the ICC venue at Umzinto, against a composite district team. Quins won the coin toss and opted to bowl first. Slow medium paced seamer Faiyas Safri bowled four wickets for 31 runs off eight overs, fast bowler Sylvester Sauli’s initial over was costly conceding 15 runs, but when re-introduced later into the attack was rewarded with three wickets for 47 runs. Right arm orthodox slow bowler Rahul Bohoti fared reasonable, capturing two wickets for 41 runs in eight overs. The most economical bowler in the Quins arsenal was meduim paced right arm off cut bowler Mohamed Patel who delivered eight overs for 16 runs taking a solitary wicket.

Umzinto progressed to a formidable tally of 189 runs being dismissed in 40 overs.

Quins opener Jeran Pillai played out an innings of 72 runs, and was undefeated at the termination of the Harlequins innings. Assistance initially came from opener Sheldon Spindler who acquired a quarter of a century, and a minor contribution of a dozen runs by Kevin Kettle. Unfortunately for Quins, Pillai ran out of batting partners when the 10th wicket was taken in the 40th over. Quins lost the match by 42 runs.

All seven Harlequins cricket teams have scheduled league matches on 15 and 16 February. Practice and coaching session will continue as usual.

The annual prize giving and a Sixers competition will be held during the first weekend of April.
