Durban Preparatory High School catches cricket fever

The SA20 Schools’ event brought cricket, and community spirit to Durban Preparatory High School, inspiring the next generation of players.

THE SA20 Schools’ event this week was part of a four-city journey designed to bring cricket, culture, and community spirit directly to South Africa’s youngest fans. Renowned for cricket excellence, Durban Preparatory High School was the ground of choice.

Faeez Jaffar, Specialist Educator and ex-president of the Dolphins, former member of the board of Cricket SA, and chairman of KZN Primary School Cricket Association, shared his excitement and hope for the future of school cricket.

“Our school is much steeped in sports, and particularly cricket. We are known for producing cricket players who have ascended to higher levels. History has shown that DPHS youngsters have always embraced the culture of cricket, forges a meaningful link with Cricket SA, and are always excited to watch their Proteas role models,” Jaffar said.

He added that the emphasis is not only on boys, but girls alike, and how cricket has managed to bring communities together, extending the reach to township schools through outreach programmes. Jaffar also highlighted the challenges faced by aspiring cricket players, especially in the townships. “Cricket is not an elitist sport, and it should be accessible to all. With that, we have noted that most township areas lack proper facilities to groom the talent, and more should be done to mitigate the situation.”

Hip-hop star YoungstaCPT ensured that the learners were entertained with his Cape Town-inspired beats.
