Dancing for the dogs

INGRID White, a dance teacher and choreographer at the Gail Smith School of Dancing was recently approached to audition a group of teenage dancers to form a dance company for the SASAD (South African Society for the Advancement of Dancing) for 2013. “The goal was to produce a dance routine worthy of making a trip to Johannesburg to perform in an amazing fundraising event called Dancers Love Dogs,” said White.

Dancers love Dogs is a non profit organisation which was established for the purpose of putting on a show every year, the proceeds of which are used for mass sterilization and care for stray dogs living in rural areas. Shows are staged in Cape, Johannesburg and Durban.

For the past eight weeks White, together with her troupe of SASAD dancers worked on their routine, Matrix Reloaded which is a blend of ballet, pantsula, contemporary and hip-hop. The group recently represented KZN when they danced their hearts out on the Promusica Theater stage in Roodeport, Johannesburg along with Joburg’s best, and some special guest dog performers. Thousands of rands were raised in aid of the charity.

Durban audiences need not feel left out. On the 30 and 31 October at 7.30pm, Dancers love Dogs will take over the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. The SASAD group, other top dancers from Durban and some local theatre personalities are all set to put on a breathtaking show.
