‘I Am I’ debuts at the Catalina

I Am I in partnership with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, is an abstract theatre piece to be staged at the Catalina during December and January 2014.

A vital communication component of any individual or society is the expression of true emotion. This is the basis upon which I Am I has been established. A theatrical production that boldly aims to inspire youth to realise their dreams and maximise their creative potential.

Combining actuality with entertainment, this engaging drama mixes various elements such as puppetry, silhouettes, physical theatre and contemporary dance movement to portray a complex plot.

A matrix narrative of a young Indian man`s life experiences from birth to present day. The gripping timeline chronicles various episodes of his upbringing in a conservative South-Indian family and how he triumphs life’s greatest battles through self-discovery and ambition.

I Am I touches on a variety of sensitive human issues such as adolescence and substance abuse, from which a range of emotions such as sadness, fear, anger and happiness are evoked.

This unusual play comprises of three principal characters, each portrayed by skilled and enthusiastic performers. Gyendra Sooriah (Rhodes University) and Eugene Shezi (UKZN) are drama graduates and Paroshen Sooriah is an undergraduate. The additional cast includes Indian contemporary dancer, Avishka Mothiram, renowned for her work at various Bollywood stage musicals in Durban.

I Am I takes place on 27 and 28 December at 8pm and 4 and 5 January 2014 at 8pm. Tickets are R80 (show viewing) and R140 (show plus meal) and are available through Computicket.
