Get your coffee facts and win with Hirsch’s!

We are always being told how some foods are bad for us, but coffee might be really good for us in more than just a few ways.

1. Coffee can make you clever and happy

Caffeine, the active ingredient in coffee is the most commonly consumed psychoactive – a fancy word to say something that does something to your brain – substance in the world. It is also a stimulant and also blocks the inhibitory effects of a neurotransmitter called adenosine. Basically what this means is is improves both a person’s mood and brain function.

Not only can coffee make you smarter in the short term, it may also protect your brain in old age. It might also prevent neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s by up to 60 per cent.

If your brain is functioning so well you need to read the science stuff you can find it at bit.ly/LPfzrA

2. Coffee might be great for your liver

Coffee, it seems, may help lower the risk of liver cancer as well as decreasing the risk of cirrhosis, which is damage to the liver due to diseases like alcoholism and hepatitis. The effects of drinking about four cups of coffee a day seem to lower the risks of both liver caner and cirrhosis by 40 per cent and 80 per cent respectively.

3. Coffee is loaded with good stuff

Coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants in the western diet, outranking fruit and vegetable consumption in this regard.

A single cup of coffee contains a decent amount of the B Vitamins, potassium and manganese, which becomes substantial when you multiply that by the number of cups of coffee consumed a day.
