Choral music concert

THE Durban Chamber Choir, currently under the musical direction of Barbara Trofimczyk, together with the Montpellier Players, a locally based professional ensemble directed by Geza Keyser, will present a unique concert of music seldom heard in Durban on 25 May.

On this occasion Dr Chris Cockburn will be the guest conductor.

Central to the programme is the delightful Welcome to all Pleasures written in 1683 by Henry Purcell in celebration of the annual Festival of St Cecilia, the patroness of music. Other items on the programme include sacred works by Pierre de la Rue, Heinrich Schutz, and W A Mozart, an early String Quartet by Josef Haydn, and some lighter folk song arrangements.

There are also various solo items.

The Durban Chamber Choir, a group of some 30 singers of all ages has been in existence since 1992 after the Errol Slatter Chorale, and later the Oriana Choir, disbanded.

The aim of the choir is to make known the great wealth of small scale choral music, sacred and secular, composed throughout the ages from the Medieval era to contemporary times. The choir has in the past sung with Baroque 2000 and with the KZNPO, given public concerts, and participated in various church services.

The concert will take place at St Thomas’ Church in Musgrave Road, at 3pm, and tickets, available at the door, are R50 (concessions R20).
