Young talent shines in Footloose
Young Berea performer Loreto Cabrera chats to Berea Mail about his experience in Footloose, the musical currently running at Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre till 13 July.
LORETO CABRERA, a pupil at St Henry's Marist College initially wanted to be a dancer, but the versatile performer is doing a great job in a leading role in Footloose, this year's annual PANSA Young Performers Production currently running at UKZN's Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre until 13 July.
“I started out as a dancer but realized that I want to become the most versatile performer I can be,” said the young talent who has been performing in dance shows, school musical productions and choir performances for the last six years.
Loreto plays Gawie in Footloose, the story of a tenacious and rebellious city teenager, Ren played by Rendani Mufamadi, who moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned by the conservative Rev Shaw Moore, played by Bradley Marshall, and the town council. Ren leads the young people of the town, including Rev Moore’s rebellious daughter Ariel, in a protest against the town’s banning of the annual dance.
The 17-year-old Berea performer said the experience of working in a semi-professional production was what brought him to the Footloose auditions just over two months ago. “Its definitely a dream come true. I've learned a lot but it's been great fun.”
According to Loreto, the highlight of being in the production was “meeting cool people and being able to do the thing we love together – perform.” But it was not plain sailing for the matriculant who also had the challenge of juggling studying and writing tests and exams while rehearsing.
Loreto says Footloose is an awesome musical that everyone will enjoy because of the “amazing choreography, sick harmonies and high energy.”
