High profile bank deposit mistaken for armed robbery

Confusion over security personnel accompanying a high profile client to a bank on Florida Road led to rumours of a bank robbery this afternoon.

WHILE pandemonium broke out on Florida Road on Friday, 1 August, afternoon when many believed a local bank was being robbed, police have confirmed that there was no bank robbery.

According to a Berea SAPS officer who was on the scene, security guards at the bank noticed a suspicious vehicle which had the registration number of a wanted vehicle and called for police back up. “The registration of the vehicle was the same as that of a suspicious vehicle previously seen at the bank. This time, however, there were armed men in the vehicle, but after investigation, it turned out that the suspicious vehicle actually belonged to a security company.”

The policeman said that the security company’s registration plate had been cloned and they were at the bank to escort “a high profile” client who was making a business deposit at the bank.

It is believed the security personnel were armed with an R5 rifle and a 9mm firearm to protect the unidentified high profile client.
