Gut String Quartet performs
The Gut String Quartet will play by invitation at the Mariannhill Monastery.
A GROUND-BREAKING event on the musical calendar takes place at the Church of the Monastery, Mariannhill on Sunday 17 August at 3pm.
The programme features a ensemble playing by special invitation of Baroque 2000, the Gut String Quartet. Founded this year, this is the first quartet of its kind in South Africa, being dedicated to authentic recreations of great music from the Baroque and later eras.
This ensemble plays on instruments with gut, not metal strings, and pursues the performance practices of earlier times. Leading the group is Antoinette Lohmann, the leading Dutch Baroque violinist who has recorded extensively on CD and who is now a frequent visitor to South Africa. The other members are Ralitza Macheva (violin) Elmarie van der Vyver (viola) and Cecilia di Cecco (cello).
