Children ingest pills
KZN EMS have sent out precautions caregivers should be aware of with medication in the home after eight children were hospitalised for ingesting tablets this week.
KZN Emergency Medical Services appeal to parents and care givers to be especially vigilant with medication in the home after being called out to rescue eight children who had ingested tablets on Monday.
According to Robert Mckenzie, KZN EMS Media Liaison Officer, the children aged between two and five years old were fortunately stable. “Despite it still being investigated how exactly these children acquired this medication, there are several precautions that should be taken with regard to medication,” McKenzie said.
“All medication must be kept out of the reach of children Educate your children not to ingest or play with medication they may find.
Do not store several types of tablets in one container, keep them in their original, labeled container.
Check expiry dates of the medication and return unused and expired medication to a clinic, hospital or pharmacy for correct and safe disposal.”
McKenzie said people should not flush medication down the toilet or throw it in the rubbish bin.
“Medication is specially prescribed, therefor do not give it away to someone else and always take medication exactly as advised by a doctor or pharmacist,” he advised.
