Acclaimed artists perform in Durban

THE Centre for Jazz and Popular Music presents acclaimed South African guitarist and songwriter, Nibs Van Der Spuy and exceptional West Country duo Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin on Tuesday 16 September at 6pm.
Nibs Van Der Spuy made his first profiled performances 25 years ago. From his humble beginnings at the Durban Folk Club to international stages, it has culminated in the newly released, deluxe anthology album Crossing Borders, Driving north.
His virtuosic acoustic guitar style and mesmeric whispering voice have attracted a worldwide following. He has been nominated seven times at the South African Music awards, performed with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and shared stages across the world with the likes of Ben Harper, Bonnie Rait and Taj Mahal, Kelly Joe Phelps and Crosby, Stills and Nash. In 2012, Nibs recorded the critically acclaimed, In the shade of the wild fig, with long-time friend and collaborator, Guy Buttery.
Exceptional West Country duo Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin have proved they are in a league of their own after clinching the coveted Best Duo 2014 title at the 15th BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year.
Sometimes mournful, often haunting and always compelling, each Henry and Martin song is a fresh journey of discovery – twisting, curling melodies and eclectic rhythms wrapping themselves around perceptive lyrics.
