Benefit concert for Glen
A benefit concert will be held at LIVE to raise funds for musician Glen Turrell.
LOCAL musician and esteemed electronics whizz-kid, Glen Turrell is in need of major back surgery.
To assist him with medical expenses, a benefit show will be held at LIVE-The Venue, 166 Matthews Meyiwa (Stamford Hill) Road on Thursday,18 September.
Performing at the show are The Reals, The Danny Fisher Show Band, Andy Turrell, Sebastian Goldswain, Martin Sigamoney, with MC Colin Peddie from Rise.
Glen’s musical journey started when he was in Standard 8 when he and a few other guys were taught to play brass instruments by the late Hugh Hind. Glen played the eb saxhorn and tenor trombone in Hugh’s amateur brass band and also in the NMR Military Brass Band.
From this he graduated to the electric guitar and, with Mike Slavin, now a Joburg musician, formed The Kinsmen.
The band recruited Howard Carpendale, who is a star in Germany, and had plenty of work locally. Glen joined The Dave Anthony Quartet and played professionally for two years. During his time on the road, he realised how dire the electronics repair and design fields were, and taught himself to become Mr Make It and Fixit.
Glen returned to Durban, married and raised a family, all the while fixing and playing occasionally.
He was a founder member, with Stuart Mey, of Larry and The Lounge Lizards, who were a very popular band across the country.
For the past 12 years he has been selling, designing and fixing, and also doing sound for various shows, mostly at the now defunct, Heritage Theatre.
He was also a member of the original cast of The Guitar That Rocked The World.
His playing is now confined to being the “grumpy old bass player” at Westville Baptist Church.
Glen’s son, Andy, is a well-known multi-instrumentalist who has played with Dan Patlansky, Cynosure and others.
