All systems go for ‘Last Night Of The Proms’

ONE of the highlights of the Durban music calendar, 'Last Night Of The Proms', will be held at The Playhouse on Saturday, 3 October, presented by the British Cultural and Heritage Association.

The 25th show in the series will see Richard Cock back at the helm of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic Ochestra, as well as the Durban Symphonic Choir to help the audience raise the roof of The Playhouse theatre.

This year’s soloist roster holds two of KZNPO’s distinguished principal players, Russian-born cellist, Boris Kerimov, and Romanian French horn player, Sorin Orsohean. The experienced musicians will be assisted by young baritone, Thuso Gumede. The KZN Pipes and Drums band and Celtic dancers, Melissa and Samatha Wood from the Bronwyn Parker Dance Studio will also feature.

Enthusiasts will be able to experience a host of talent and concert veterans, which includes 'O Fortuna' from Carl Orff’s 'Carmina Burana', 'Some Enchanted Evening' from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 'South Pacific', 'Va pensiero' (the hugely popular 'Chorus of Hebrew Slaves') from Verdi’s 'Nabucco', Glazunov’s 'Reverie', 'Finlandia' by Sibelius and the Leroy Anderson evergreen, 'Blue Tango'.

As locally-based, seasoned 'prommers' will know, the Durban event is modelled on the wildly exuberant last night culmination of Britain’s world-renowned BBC Promenade Concert series.
