SO CHEF! with Reunionese chef Jean Alexandre Galmar, takes place at venues in Durban from 15 to 17 October.

So Chef!, which is co-organised by the French Institute of South Africa together with the Alliance Française network, takes place this year as part of the National Nutrition Week of the South African Department of Basic Education.

The event offers a variety programme and worthwhile experiences for foodies and people of all ages, with workshops organised in primary and secondary schools, TVET Colleges and universities, workshops in the Alliance Française network and partnering cooking schools as well as four-handed gastronomic dinners (two chefs prepare one menu) in restaurants.

On Thursday 15 October from 10am to noon, there will be a workshop at Mayville High School. For those who like to get creative and get their hands dirty in the kitchen, this is a special workshop organised with chef Jean Alexandre Galmar.

At 6pm, there will be a French/Reunionese cocktail function at the Alliance Française Durban, 22 Sutton Crescent, Morningside, with chefs Jean Alexandre Galmar and Jean-Paul Videau.

On Friday 16 October from 8.30am to 11.30am, there will be a culinary workshop at the Durban University of Technology where the Hospitality Department will teach, share recipes and have the students discover the Reunionese gastronomy.

On Saturday 17 October from 11.30am to 1.30pm, there will be a workshop at the Alliance Française of Durban. Lessons will be made especially for pupils and students to discover and rediscover tastes and learn to make easy, simple and balanced dishes in collaboration with the chef.

At 6pm, there will be a Gastronomic Dinner at Fusion Restaurant with Galmar and Shaun Smith. Two chefs, one menu. The chefs will bring their culinary creativity together to create a four-handed menu where “flavour explosion” will be the talk of the town.
