Exhibition showcases local talent
First Glimpse will showcase work by local and professional artists at the Breathing Space in Glenwood.
COMMUNITY art initiative First Glimpse will host a pop-up exhibition at the Breathing Space in Glenwood on 14 and 15 November.
The aim of the exhibition is to open up new avenues of mutual benefit and communication between artists and the communities in which they live and art consumers.
Submission of art works was open to everyone with this exhibition providing a platform for both amateur and professional artists to showcase and sell their work.
First Glimpse also sourced art work by community artists whose work would generally not be seen in this forum. To ensure quality, the final selection was made by a committee of respected local artists.
First Glimpse will be hosting the talented local artist Njabulo Simphiwe Mkhwanazi who hails from Mandeni in KwaZulu-Natal. His passion and aspirations for art has led him to design and paint his emotions and poetic messages on tshirts as well as portraits on dry bark. Recently he was awarded the 2nd prize for the best stand at the Durban Buisness Fair 2015.
Nomsa Ngidi was born in 1969 in Johannesburg. She grew up in the valley of a Thousand Hills in a village called KwaMnamatha. Nomsa currently works at an art gallery and is a art student of Maggie Strachen. Her use of vivid colour in her art works is inherited by her background.
Nomsa participated in many art exhibitions in Durban and recently in Cape Town. Nomsa will have her oil paintings on display at the First Glimpse exhibition.
The First Glimpse exhibition will showcase a wide variety of mediums, including jewellery and pottery. Even food is represented, with mouthwatering goodies from Chilli Chocolate chefs Zainab and Faatimah Paruk on offer.
The First Glimpse initiative also has another purpose. As director Zahida Danka said: “We believe that art has incredible potential to benefit all members of our community. After each mobile exhibition a percentage of proceeds is invested in a local community outreach organisation.”
The chosen beneficiary for this exhibition is the Circle of Care Association, a registered non-profit organisation whose aim is to council, educate and empower vulnerable women and children. They also engage in relief work within the larger community and in times of crisis.
