Asherville Library celebrates 59 years with book festival

As libraries close around eThekwini, Asherville Library will celebrate nearly six decades of service by promoting books, reading and literacy.

Asherville Library will mark its 59th anniversary with a celebration of books, reading, and local authors when it hosts Bookmarket: Asherville event on Wednesday, July 15.

The event, co-hosted by Multi-Marketing and Book Bank South Africa in association with Asherville Library, will run from 10:00 to 15:00 at the library on 9 Tulip Road, Asherville.

Organisers say visitors can expect an intimate programme featuring a number of authors who will present and discuss their books with both children and adults. The talks will take place in front of the library’s signature centrepiece bookshelf, offering readers the opportunity to engage directly with writers.

The event comes at a time when several libraries across KZN have faced closures, making community libraries such as Asherville an important resource for promoting literacy and lifelong learning.

According to the organisers, “Amid the chaos of multiple library closures across the province, the long-standing Asherville Library serves as a shining beacon of light for the importance of literature in an increasingly digital world and events such as Bookmarket: Asherville aims to raise the awareness of this importance.”

Taking place during the June/July school holidays, the organisers are encouraging families to attend and introduce young readers to the joys of books and storytelling.

Entry is open to the public.
