Government officials prioritise fitness

"We want them to be fit and strong."

Government employees took part in various sports games to keep themselves fit and healthy during the Wellness Sports Day at Boksburg Correctional Services on March 25.

The initiative, held at the sports field, included the officials of the Gauteng Department of Education, Emergency Management Services of Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg, EMPD, National Parks and Department of Health, Dawn Park police.

Teboho Tshabalala, a prison warder of Boksburg Correctional Services, who was a sports instructor on the day, said the initiative was introduced to keep government officials fit and strong.

“We choose to host the sports event because we want to redeem our colleagues’ exercising custom, as we all know that most of their training customs and schedules were halted by Covid-19.

“We have done sports initiatives in the past, but this is the first major sports initiative we have undertaken,” said Tshabalala.

Rhulane Motua, an assistant practitioner at Boksburg Correctional Services, said she is happy to be part of the initiative. “The initiative is held by the employer because the employer knows a healthy employee yields good results,” said Motua.

The Boksburg Correctional Services spokesperson, Sello Modise, said the initiative comprised aerobics, athletics, netball, soccer and pool.

“Exercising is important because it keeps the body active and healthy. What we are doing here today is for our well-being. Everyone is enjoying today.

“We have invited some of the insurance companies to educate our officials about saving money,” said Modise.
