UPDATE: No court charges in Boksburg ‘date-rape’ case

Investigations did not yield prima facie evidence against a previous suspect.

A recent rape investigation made public by the police has not yielded any court-ready evidence.

Although Boksburg police have found their “person of interest” in the case where a woman claimed she was raped by her date, his arrest was followed by release, and not prosecution.

According to the investigating officer, Sgt Molise, of the Family Violence Child and Sexual Offences Unit, the man was arrested on May 19, shortly after police received information about his whereabouts from the public.

He was, according to the police, subsequently charged with rape and was due to appear in court on May 21.

The matter was, however, not placed on the court roll as there was insufficient evidence, and the man was released.

However, police said they are going ahead with their investigation and the case may go back to court, provided enough evidence has been gathered.

This publication previously reported:

Boksburg detectives investigating the case of a woman who said she was raped by her male date in a room at a guesthouse in Boksburg have identified the ‘person of interest’ in the matter.

According to the police, the man who emerged as a figure of interest in the investigation was last seen driving a grey BMW with a foreign number plate.

Giving her version of events, the woman reportedly told the police that she and her date first met on social media before going on a date on February 7.

After meeting at an undisclosed address on February 7, the pair reportedly later on the same day went to a local guesthouse where they secured a room, before the rape happened.

Police previously identified a person of interest in the case and requested community members to track down a man whose image the SAPS circulated. However, the man has since been tracked down by the police who have not established a criminal court case against him.

Therefore, all traces relating to his identity have been removed from this site.
