Boksburg High School welcomes Grade 11 learners

After almost four months at home, Grade R, 6 and 11 learners across the country returned to school on July 6.

This is the second phase of the reopening of schools following last month’s phasing in of the Grade seven and 12 learners.

In Boksburg High School 202 Grade 11 learners pitched for school while wearing civvies.

From as early as 7.15am, learners were already queuing outside the school in a neat line while wearing their masks and observing social distancing. Before they went inside the school premises, they were hand sanitised and screened. Their temperatures were recorded next to their names and were further asked questions on a declaration form pertaining to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Learners were again sanitised as the educators walked the learners to the schools hall where COVID-19 orientation got underway. All procedures were explained and demonstrated where necessary. There after learners followed the schools timetable for normal academic lessons.

According to the acting principal at the school, Evelyn Haahjem, as part of their role in keeping the learners and staff safe during these trying times, they have made sure that no learner or staff enters the premises without a mask.

“Social distancing marks are clearly visible on waiting areas, outside and inside of classroom and break areas. Youth brigade assists with temperature screening from morning to afternoon. Temperatures and symptoms are recorded of all staff and learners. Screenings and hand sanitizing takes place regularly during the day,” she said.

Haahjem said there’s cleaning of desks and chairs when learners enter a venue. All classrooms and bathrooms are disinfected every afternoon while Grade 11 and 12 are using different break areas.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga said provision was made for parents who were not ready to have their children return to the classroom.

“These parents are advised to apply to their provincial education departments for home learning in terms of section four. They must not go to schools to apply for home education,” she said.
