EMPD officers clean up ‘drug-infested’ Ekurhuleni streets

Police officers deployed in crime-plagued areas have taken down dozens of offenders in recent months and have recovered stolen property, deadly weapons and narcotics

In their recent crime prevention operation in the city, members of the EMPD’s Drug Enforcement and Anti-Cable Theft units pounced on nine suspects, including a man they caught trying to steal copper cables in Dunswart.

Drugs, money and implements used in break-ins were confiscated during the law enforcement operation.

According to EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng, on October 3 the department’s task team held a 13-hour-long operation in Boksburg, Daveyton and Etwatwa areas, and apprehended nine suspects in separate incidents for possession of narcotics and theft.

“At the Dunswart Railway Station members on patrol handcuffed a 23-year-old man found using a hammer and chisel to damage the Prasa-branded ceramic shield with the intent to gain access to the covered copper cables,” said Mokheseng.

He was taken to the Boksburg Police Station, where he was charged with malicious damage to property and possession of implements used for house break-ins.

One of the seven apprehended for possession of drugs in Daveyton and Etwatwa during the operation.

On the same day, officers descended on Daveyton and Etwatwa areas, where they apprehended seven suspects, including a woman found with illicit drugs in Mayibuye section and surroundings. One hundred and forty-seven knotted plastic bags of nyaope, 26 pieces of cocaine valued at R10 450 and R230 cash were confiscated.

The suspects are facing charges of possession and possible dealing in illicit substances and were scheduled to appear in their respective courts soon.

Mokheseng added the department is doing all it can to stamp out crime in the city, areas with high levels of crime in particular.
“Our task teams and members from all our precincts help maintain a visible policing presence throughout the city and will continue to use all the resources we have to keep the city safe while bringing offenders to justice,” added Mokheseng.
