The Dawn Park police are cautioning members of the community not to fall prey to vehicle fraud schemes.
This comes after a number of fraud cases have been reported at the police station since last month.
According to the Dawn Park SAPS spokesperson, Const Nkemeleng Mabula, most of the victims saw advertisements for the sale of motor vehicles on the internet and social media.
“Most of the victims were convinced to the extent that they paid large amounts of money before verifying the physical location of the seller or if the vehicle exists. It is advisable to confirm details of the seller before any payment can be made,” Mabula warned.
Meanwhile, fraudsters have also been targeting indigents or unemployed people to open a bank account for them using their details in exchange for money.
The account holder would then be ordered to handover the account PIN to the fraudsters.
“It has been established that the sole purpose of these accounts is for the fraudsters to save the money that has been accumulated through criminal activities. We urged the community not to engage in these kind of activities as they will be held accountable for any transactions linked to their account number,” Mabula said.
If anyone suspects any criminal activity such as this, they are urged to contact the Dawn Park SAPS on 011 8628 000.
