New Year’s fireworks leads to more stray dogs – SPCA
During the first week of January, more pets were received at the Boksburg SPCA compared to other years
Approximately 15 pets, including dogs and cats, were taken in at the Boksburg SPCA on New Year’s Eve and on January 1.
A total of 11 dogs and four cats were received as strays at the society.
According to Vicky Finnemore, Boksburg SPCA manager, during the first week of January when they reopened their doors, they took in more strays compared to other years.
She discouraged the use of fireworks by the public on New Year’s Eve.
“On New Year’s Eve, the sounds of fireworks were terrible in most parts of Boksburg, which showed that people are still continuing to support the trade of fireworks, knowing fully the terror and injury they cause to animals,” Finnemore said.
Finnemore further shared that luckily they have not yet heard of any serious injuries to animals caused by fireworks.
