Four protestors arrested and then released

Arrested protesters have since been released from police custody.

Four people were arrested during last week’s service delivery protest action in Windmill Park.

A group of protesters from Windmill Park and Holomisa blockaded the stretch of Barry Marais Road between the prison and the R21 with burning tyres and rocks on March 17.

According to the Dawn Park police spokesperson Const Nkemeleng Mabula, the suspects have since been released from custody.

Daltin Magabane, the Ward 99 community leader (Holomisa informal settlement), told the Advertiser that the community have ended the protest which took place from March 17 to 19.

“We have since raised our grievances to the Chief Whip of the ANC, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, who engaged us about the matter. We had a meeting with him on March 23 and he promised to come back to us with feedback after seven days,” Magabane said.

Leon Rooi, ward 43 community leader said the area is peaceful after the unrest, which was apparently sparked by the metro ignoring their pleas.

Some of the community’s demands include houses and employment opportunities.

Ward 99 Clr Mduduzi Luvalo said they met with community leaders and touched on some of the issues that the residents were not happy about.

“During the meeting Dlabathi admitted that service delivery in the area was too slow, although, other services have been carried out such as the provision of flushing mobile toilets for the D-Section, Lindelani and various parks. The re-surfacing of Central and Barry Marais Roads were highlighted,” said Luvalo.

Luvalo said the way forward was that Dlabathi will ask mayor Mzwandile Masine and the service delivery team to assess some of the issues that have been brought to their attention such as portholes, lack of grass cutting, illegal dumping, and storm waters blockages.
