Police investigating death of woman in taxi

Police are investigating the death of a woman at the East Rand Mall taxi rank on April 9.

According to Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube, the woman, who was identified as Ireen Mathebula (49), died while seated in a taxi at around 11am.

An inquest docket has been opened and the cause of death is still unknown.

“The deceased boarded a taxi and when the taxi was about to depart from the taxi rank it was discovered the woman was not moving,” explained Ramaube.
“Paramedics were called by members of the taxi rank and upon their arrival, they declared her dead.

“There were no injuries on the body and no foul play is suspected, hence an inquest docket has been opened to determine the cause of death.”

According to taxi rank queue marshal Mduduzi Mbhele, Mathebula arrived at the rank in a taxi from Dunswart that day and then boarded a taxi destined for Kempton Park.

“Upon her arrival from Dunswart, she boarded the Kempton Park taxi quite normally, like everyone else, and she showed no signs of illness.
“Nobody suspected there was anything wrong with her,” explained Mbhele.

“Moments after she boarded the taxi, other passengers realised her eyes had closed and she was not moving.

“We were alerted, the passengers exited the taxi and we called the paramedics.

“Upon their arrival, she was declared dead.”
