Ekurhuleni metro adamant that their buses are reliable and maintained

The police and EMPD members are investigating the killing of the two women who were knocked over by a municipal bus on April 6.

The Ekurhuleni metro has shared details regarding the mayor’s statement last week about the brakes of the municipal bus which killed two women outside the Boksburg Civic Centre Clinic being intact.

The mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina, made this statement when he addressed the family of one of the deceased woman, Annatjie van Niekerk (61), in Witfield on April 7, stating people have made speculations but the brakes of the bus had been checked and were intact; however, a full report is pending.

According to the metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, an onsite investigation of the bus was conducted on the same day by a team of workshop experts appointed in the Department of Transport and Fleet Management.

“The brakes were indeed intact when the accident occurred. The investigation is being handled by the EMPD (Boksburg Precinct),” Dlamini said.

Dlamini emphasised that the Ekurhuleni buses are reliable as they are regularly serviced according to the maintenance schedule of each bus.

He revealed that on the morning of that tragic day, the municipal bus was servicing the Graceland, Elsburg, Reiger Park and Boksburg route.

According to a reliable source, the driver was transporting schoolchildren to these areas.

The source revealed the driver of the municipal bus has about 15 years of service.

“The driver was discharged from hospital on the very same day. Investigations have commenced and the city should await the outcomes of the report,” Dlamini said.
