Blocked weep holes the cause of flooding at subway

The metro pointed out the lake is at full capacity and its water backwashes to the subway through the stormwater pipes.

Blocked Boksburg Lake weep holes are said to be the cause of the Hospital Road subway flooding in Plantation.

This is according to the metro’s response to the Advertiser’s questions regarding the perpetual flooding of the subway beneath the railway line linking people to Tambo Hospital, Boksburg SAPS, and the CBD.

According to the metro, the weep holes in the concrete barricade, designed to monitor the levels of water, are blocked at the moment. The debris and litter that are in the dam have blocked all the sluice holes.

“The City will dispatch officials to unblock the holes to allow for water to seep into the stream across Commissioner Road,” said metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

Dlamini pointed out that the lake is at full capacity and the water from the dam backwashes to the subway through the stormwater pipes.
“The City will excavate an additional channel to help divert the access water. As soon as this is done, the water from underneath the subway will flow back into the lake,” he said.

The metro said all the artificial lakes are constructed with weep holes in the concrete barricade to monitor the levels of water. When the dam reaches its maximum capacity, the excess water is excreted through those weep holes to the nearby stream.
