Woman robbed at gunpoint by e-hailing taxi driver in Boksburg

The woman tried to flag down motorists for assistance after the robbery but nobody stopped.

A 30-year-old woman was left traumatised after the driver of the taxi she requested from Bolt allegedly robbed her of her valuables at gunpoint on May 12.

According to Trodance Molele, she requested a ride from work to her home in Trichardts Road.

“When I got into the vehicle, I greeted the driver and I saw he looked just like the one I saw on the Bolt app, although he was wearing a mask.

“About seven kilometres from where he fetched me, he suddenly stopped and he got out of the car. I thought he hit something because he was checking the car.”

Molele said they then proceeded to drive, but at the corner of Rietfontein and Rondebult roads, the driver started slowing down.

“He then turned into Paul Smit Street since I was supposed to fetch my child from the daycare before going home.

Unexpectedly he pulled over and took out a firearm, pointing it at my stomach.”

Molele said she was told to open the door and leave everything behind.

“I was so confused and questioned what was happening and he just said I must get out. He stole my work laptop, my handbag containing two smartphones and a purse with bank cards, driver’s licence and my ID.”

Molele said she waved at motorists to help her but nobody stopped. As shocked as she was, she still walked to her son’s daycare.

“Since the incident, I’ve been having sleepless nights. I am taking it one step at a time. It was such a shock. It wasn’t my first time using Bolt as I started using its services three weeks before when I took my car in for repairs. I never expected something like this to happen.”

The distraught woman said she went to the Boksburg North SAPs an hour after the incident to open a case.

“My colleague contacted Bolt and was told that I must personally contact them to complain. I then contacted them and was told that the driver has been locked on the Bolts app system.

“I wasn’t satisfied with their response because he could still add a new profile and continue working as if nothing happened,” Molele said.

Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube confirmed they are investigating a case of armed robbery.

The Advertiser requested comment from Bolt, but no response was received at the time of publication.
