Metro finally unblocks overflowing sewage drain

This came after residents complained that they were for 11 days subjected to a smelly environment as raw sewage from the drain spilled into their property.

The City of Ekurhuleni has finally unblocked the clogged and overflowing sewage drain located in a business park on North Rand Road, Hughes.

This came after business operators at Roadring Business Park complained that they were for 11 days subjected to a smelly environment as raw sewage from the drain spilled into their property.

According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the department sent out its crew to unblock the sewer line after it was reported on May 28, but the team failed to clear the blockage. They then called for the assistance of a high-pressure jet truck that finally cleared the blockage on June 8.

“The blockage was caused by all kinds of foreign objects, including mop heads, bricks and other rubble. The department will investigate the source of these objects in an effort to prevent future blockages from occurring,” explained Dlamini.

The Advertiser also reported that a Boksburg North resident complained he and his neighbours had for months been trying to get the metro to attend to sewage spillage on Sixth Street in Boksburg North.

Reacting to this complaint, the metro told this publication the department’s team cleared the sewer blockage on June 3. But in an effort to confirm the matter had been resolved, officials tried to make contact with the complainant, but he could not be reached on his cellphone.

“The department will send a supervisor to inspect the property to confirm all is still in order.”
