Suspect nabbed on Atlas Road for possession of live ammunition and dagga

“The man was also found in possession of three knives and a firearm registered in his name.”

A man found in possession of an unlawful number of ammunition, as well as narcotics, was arrested during a patrol on Atlas Road on July 17.

Law enforcement agencies that were part of the patrol were Boksburg North SAPS, Boksburg North CPF, AfriForum Boksburg and security companies including Makopano Risk Solutions and Legendary Guardians Exclusive Protection.

According to the police, the total number of ammunition the man was found with exceeds the number he is allowed to possess for the same calibre as his licence stipulates. He was only permitted to have 200 rounds of ammunition for the same calibre of his licenced firearm. Police are investigating why he had that amount of ammunition with him.

Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube said police officers and stakeholders stopped and searched a vehicle at about 03:00 and discovered the motorist had dagga and a total of 961 live rounds of ammunition in his possession.

“The man was also found in possession of three knives and a firearm registered in his name.

“He was charged for not adhering to the Disaster Management Act by being on the road during curfew, possession of ammunition and dagga.”

He will appear at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

Ramaube said the main objective of the patrol was to safeguard buildings amid the unrest and looting in the country.

“We were instructed by our national office to intensify patrols. During the patrols, we conducted roadblocks and ensured citizens were adhering to the lockdown regulations,” he added.

Dewet Ungerer, AfriForum district coordinator for the East Rand, said AfriForum is grateful to work with the SAPS and other security companies to protect communities.

“It’s become clear again the last few weeks that neighbourhood watches and other safety structures within the community are of critical importance to assist the authorities when communities are in danger,” concluded Ungerer.

He added AfriForum Boksburg Neighbourhood Watch will continue to work with other law enforcement agencies to combat crime.
