Man fatally shot in attempted robbery at Boksburg Licensing Department

He was among four men who allegedly targeted the City’s licensing hub, where they tried to help themselves to the licensing inventory.

A man was killed on September 11 in a shoot-out with security personnel after he, along with his accomplices, allegedly attempted to rob the Boksburg Licensing Department.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lt Col Kelebogile Thepa, four men tried to rob the facility on Saturday morning. Their mission was, however, foiled by security officers deployed at the centre.
“The men’s attempt to flee with the licensing inventory was short-lived after they were met with bullets fired by the security personnel at the centre.

“Three of the four suspects managed to flee after an exchange of bullets with the security personnel, however, the one suspect was fatally wounded and declared dead on the scene,” explained Thepa.

The EMPD warned would-be-criminals to refrain from targeting the City’s facilities and resources, which are intended for public use.

“We are experiencing backlogs within our licensing centres and trying to speedily provide the services to our community, but our efforts are hindered by acts of criminality, by people who deem it fit to be destructive instead of constructive in rebuilding our City,” said the divisional head Hamilton Ledwaba.

Municipal police commissioner Isaac Mapiyeye commended the acts of bravery from the City’s security personnel, who never backed down.
“Although there were injuries sustained, their training and competence necessitated for a swift move to activate justifiable self-defence. Jubilation on the lives spared during this horrific act,” said Mapiyeye in a statement.

Residents are urged to report acts of criminality in the City to their nearest police station, EMPD Precinct stations or Ekurhuleni Anti- Fraud hotline on 0800 102 201.
