Suspected water contamination has prompted the City of Ekurhuleni to close the Nigel Dam with immediate effect on March 14.
Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed the closure, saying City officials were drawn to a foul smell coming from the dam and several floating dead fish over the weekend.
A decision was taken to close the dam for further investigation.
“The City wishes to caution people who are normally fishing at the dam to stop doing so, in case the fish are poisonous and a threat to human consumption.
“Nigel Dam patrons will be notified of the opening of the facility once investigations have been concluded and the water has been purified.”
