No clear solution in sight to the rotting Comet sewer line

The spillage is caused by the damaged main sewer collector traversing the area.

Residents of Golden Oaks and Comet Village will have to wait a few more days before the metro puts an end to the raw sewage spill befouling the environment.

The Advertiser recently reported that the community has, for weeks, been besieged by a major sewage spill, with the smell of the wastewater and faeces permeating the streets and people’s homes.
The metro responded to our request for comment on March 29 and said its crews were sent out to stop the spillage, but their efforts proved unsuccessful, because of the conditions of the ground.

“The unstableness of the ground has delayed the progress of repairing the collapsed sewer pipe in the area. Whilst the City was excavating to expose the pipe, the sidewalls of the excavation kept caving in, posing serious safety risks for the workers on site. As a result, the department halted the repair works,” explained metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.
He said the main cause of the spillage is the main sewer collector traversing the area that has collapsed, causing the sewer to overflow.

The metro said its department will re-route the sewer pipeline because of the unsafe conditions on site. Construction is expected to be completed in approximately the next seven days.
