Lakeside dominates in Boksburg Cross-country Championship
The school not only scooped all the 12 trophies up for grabs, but also walked away with the thirteenth trophy for the overall winner on August 16.
Lakeside Primary School has again this year emerged as the overall winner of the Boksburg Cross Country Championship for the 10th consecutive year, walking away with all the trophies up for grabs.
Before the championship event, schools took part in three league meetings in July and August. Athletes had to be in the top 20 twice to participate in the Boksburg Championship held on August 16.
Judging from their excellent performance, athletes from the school promise to make it through to the national championship. They would appreciate any form of support or sponsorship from local organisations and individuals as they climb to the top.
According to the thrilled deputy principal, Joan Moosa, during the league events recently held at the Boksburg City Stadium, Lakeside Primary made history when they took first place in all the categories, consisting of boys and girls groups from under-nines to under 14s.
This is the first time in the history of the championship that such a feat has been achieved.
The school not only scooped all the 12 trophies up for grabs, but also walked away with the thirteenth trophy for the overall winner on August 16.
The school won 10 gold medals, seven silver medals, seven bronze medals, and 18 certificates at the championship event on August 16.
This excellent performance saw 100 athletes from the school qualifying to represent Boksburg at the district championship to be held on August 24 at Rietvlei in Alberton, where they will be competing against Ekurhuleni South schools.
“Lakeside Primary School started the 2023 cross-country league in full force, taking on 19 other competitive schools in their league.
“For the past four weeks, Lakeside Primary had performed exceptionally well in their league, and this saw 105 athletes making it through to the Boksburg championship,” explained Moosa.
‘Lakeside is the best. Lakeside is the best,’ is the song of victory the proud athletes of Lakeside Primary sang after winning the trophy.
“The success and victory of the athletes after winning the league shows that Lakeside is a school to be reckoned with and who definitely lives up to their motto: Klim tot bo,”
Moosa said the school is confident that the team is going to make them proud at the district championship and they believe that many of them will make it to the provincial competition to be held on September 2 in Suiderlig, and then qualify for the nationals to be held in Limpopo from September 30 to October 1.
