Residents tackle overgrown veld
The organisers invite businesses to be part of the next clean-up on Mandela Day, July 18.
Residents took it upon themselves to tackle the overgrown piece of land opposite the Royal Reef West Estate on July 6.
Ilse Horn of the Royal Reef West Estate and Rehandre Landman, the founder of the Skills Solutions NPO, organised the clean-up.
Landman said the initiative continues from the clean-ups organised earlier in the year by Skills Solutions.
He said the ERPM Golf Club, Freedom Front Plus and a local business, The CareTakers, supported the clean-up.
“Together, we cleared a large portion of the overgrown veld, which has, in recent months, become a crime hotspot for residents and delivery drivers,” said Landman.
He said their future clean-ups depend on their ability to get sponsorships, equipment and volunteers for labour.
“We are happy with the current measure of progress, but there is still much to do. One of the major concerns is the area’s lighting. The municipality has failed to maintain the streetlights, and we would like to erect solar floodlights ourselves on the now obsolete streetlamps.”
