Reiger Park sergeant flies the flag high at awards

These accolades recognise his exceptional dedication, leadership, and commitment to crime prevention in his community.

Reiger Park SAPS Sergeant Lufuno Mudzuli was named man of the year and awarded Vispol and operation employee of the year at the Ekurhuleni District SAPS Excellence Awards held at Hoërskool Jeugland in Kempton Park on October 11.

These accolades recognise his exceptional dedication, leadership, and commitment to crime prevention in his community.

This latest recognition adds to Mudzuli’s growing list of accolades, having already claimed man of the year at the Ekurhuleni and Gauteng SAPS Excellence Awards last year.

As a sector manager at Reiger Park SAPS, from April 2023 to September this year, Mudzuli made 155 drug-related arrests, confiscating a total of 763.333 grams of drugs and seizing 33 illegal firearms.

“These successes came in collaboration with Captain Nkwanyana, our Vispol commander.

“Weekly drug operations aimed at raiding suspected drug houses were held,” said the station’s spokesperson, Constable Johannes Msimanga.

“Mudzuli has also implemented numerous crime prevention initiatives that address both immediate and long-term community safety needs.

“His role goes beyond just policing. He is a trusted figure in the community, actively engaging with residents through crime prevention forums, street committees and local church events.”

Another initiative launched by Mudzuli is aimed at empowering women and young boys. It includes a boy child programme that encourages young men to become agents of change in reducing violence against women.

“I see myself as a problem-solver, not just a crime fighter. I work closely with the community to build trust and provide policing with a human touch,” he said.

He said despite working long hours, including weekends without expecting overtime, his passion for his job remains unwavering.

“In addition to my professional achievements, I founded an NPO that runs a soup kitchen every Saturday, feeding over 230 children in Ramaphosa.

“I also provide clothing to disadvantaged families and assist in emergencies, such as when shacks were destroyed in a fire earlier this year.

“My efforts extend to schools, where I speak with learners about the dangers of substance abuse and bullying.”

“Through my hard work, I have earned the trust of the community. Many residents reach out to me directly for assistance or advice.”

He continues to implement creative crime prevention strategies, including regular operations with patrollers and collaborative efforts with local business owners to improve safety.
