Workshop teaches about fantastic fungi

The interactive session left participants equipped with both spores and confidence to grow their own mushrooms.

The Urban Ruins NPO hosted its first oyster mushroom growing workshop recently, with the participants learning hands-on techniques for cultivating their own mushrooms.

The interactive session saw the participants get spores and the confidence to grow their mushrooms.

Clayton Viljoen, the CEO of Urban Ruins, said it was a fantastic day, and the students left with the spores they needed to start growing their mushrooms and the knowledge to do it successfully.

“Farmer Dave Davis rocked it and made the whole experience enjoyable.”

Viljoen said the profitable workshop would help Urban Ruins continue its work.

“The profit margin was fantastic, but better is the support from the community. It shows that people are excited about what we do,” he said.

“The workshop proceeds go directly towards covering Urban Ruins’ operational costs, ensuring the organisation can continue its mission of fostering sustainability and community engagement.”

Participants eagerly prepare their buckets of oyster mushroom spores during Urban Ruins’ first workshop.

For those who missed the first session, more are to come. Urban Ruins will host three more workshops on October 26 and November 16 and 30, from 09:00 to 13:00.

Costing R450 a person, there will be a light lunch of dishes made with delicious oyster mushrooms, and the participants will receive an inoculated bucket to start growing mushrooms at home.

“This is a hands-on experience, and we hope even more people join us for the upcoming sessions,” added Viljoen.
