Kids get free hair-do’s ahead of school
Residents came together in the days leading up to schools reopening to offer free washes and haircuts to vulnerable children on January 13 and 14.
Yet again, the people of Reiger Park have demonstrated the incredible impact of a community united in purpose.
In the days leading up to schools reopening, the residents came together to offer free washes and haircuts to the area’s vulnerable children on January 13 and 14.
Munnera Abdullah, who is involved in the initiative, said it was not just about grooming. They also wanted to alleviate parents’ financial strain and ensure children started the school year confidently and feeling cared for.
“As the school year begins, many parents in the community are already stretched thin with the costs of uniforms, supplies and shoes.
“For some, even the small things, like getting their children’s hair cut, can be a burden. We wanted to help lift that load for parents already facing so much.”

Abdullah said the last thing parents should worry about is the cost of a haircut, so over 200 children had free haircuts and washes.
“We thought, let’s do something small to ease that burden,” Abdullah said.
Abdullah bought the necessary hair products and supplies for a successful event with her pension.
The community rallied behind her, with local businesses and residents contributing everything from shampoo to combs, ensuring every child who showed up left feeling fresh and ready for school.

Community member Crezanne Kelmovitz praised the effort, saying, “This is a true community effort, and beautiful to witness. It has lifted a burden for many people.”
Abdullah was overwhelmed by the positive response. “The support has been amazing. This wouldn’t have been possible without all the contributions, whether it was donating supplies, volunteering time or spreading the word. It’s truly a community effort.”
She plans to host the initiative again in June.
“So many people have asked when we’ll do it next, and we’re excited to make this a regular initiative.
“The kids and parents have been so appreciative, and we want to continue helping however we can.”
Abdullah encourages everyone to reach out, whether through donations or volunteering.
“If you want to be part of this, we’d love to have you. Every little bit helps, and together, we can make a big difference in these kids’ lives.”
