Local grabs seventh place in canoe race

He finished seventh in his category and 108th overall in the K1 race.

The East Rand Kayak (ERK) Club’s Mike Barry clocked a seventh-place finish in the grandmasters category during the two-day N3TC Drak Challenge Canoe Marathon on the Umzikulu River in Underberg, on January 31 and February 1.

Barry clocked 02:56:43.55 on the 38.68km distance from Swartburg Bridge to Hopewell Farm on day one. He completed the 24.8km day two distance from Castleburn Bridge and concluded at the Swartburg Bridge in 01:56:33.12 for a combined 04:53:16.67 to finish the race 108 overall in the K1 category.

Andy Birkett won the men’s race when he clocked 02:09:05 on day one and 01:26:15 on day two to finish in a combined 03:35:20. Matthew Fenn was grabbed runner-up honours in 03:36:49 while Hamish Lovemore completed the top three in 03:41:20.

Christie Mackenzie won the women’s race in 04:07:50. She coved the 38.68km day one distance in 02:28:02 and completed the 24.8km on day two in 01:39:27.

Nix Birkett finished second in a combine 04:07:52 while Saskia Hockly secured the last podium position in 04:08:07.
