Baker turns passion into profession

Losing her mother was an unimaginable loss, but through her work, she has found a way to honour her memory.

At just 29 years old, Maryke du Pisani has already faced more challenges than many experience in a lifetime.

After losing her job last year and, just weeks later, enduring the devastating loss of her mother, du Pisani found herself at one of the lowest points in her life.

But instead of allowing grief and uncertainty to consume her, she made a bold decision that would change her life.

With determination in her heart and flour on her hands, she launched her own baking business in December, a venture that has not only brought her joy but has also inspired her community.

“When I lost my job last year, I knew I had to do something to keep me pushing.

“I couldn’t just sit at home and not do something about it. I had responsibilities to take care of, and I needed to find a way forward.”

For many, the weight of such challenges might have been paralysing, but for Du Pisani, it became the fuel for a new chapter in her life.

Baking has always been a part of Du Pisani’s life—a creative outlet and a source of comfort.

“I have always loved baking and enjoy it.”

Whether it was whipping up cakes for family celebrations or experimenting with recipes in her free time, she found joy in the process of creating something beautiful and delicious.

So, when faced with the question of what to do next after losing her job, the answer seemed clear: turn her passion into a profession.

“I realised that baking was something I could do not only to support myself but also to bring happiness to others.

“With little more than my oven, a few trusted recipes, and an unshakable resolve, I began my journey as an entrepreneur.”

Sweet taste of success
Starting a business is never easy, especially during times of personal hardship, but Du Pisani was determined to make it work.

She began small, baking from home and taking orders from friends and neighbours.

Word quickly spread about her delicious creations, from intricately decorated cakes to melt-in-your-mouth Hertzog cookies. The overwhelming support she received from the community gave her the confidence to keep going.

“The support has been incredible, It’s amazing to see how many people believe in me and want to help me succeed. It’s more than I ever expected.

“Customers have praised not only the quality of my baked goods but also the love and care that goes into every bite.”

Her business has grown steadily over the past few months, with orders pouring in for birthdays, weddings, and other special occasions.

Turning pain into purpose
For Du Pisani, baking is more than just a way to make a living—it’s also been a source of healing.

Losing her mother was an unimaginable loss, but through her work, she has found a way to honour her memory.

“My mom always believed in me. She taught me so much about strength and perseverance.

“Every time I bake something new or see someone smile because of my work, I feel like she’s right there with me.”

Future plans
While Du Pisani’s journey is still in its early stages, she has big dreams for the future.

She hopes to one day open her own bakery storefront—a cozy space where people can gather to enjoy freshly baked treats and share moments of joy.

She also wants to expand her menu to include more unique creations that reflect both traditional recipes and modern trends.

But for now, she remains focused on perfecting her craft and building relationships with her customers.

“Every day is a learning experience. I’m so grateful for where I am now, but I know there’s so much more ahead.”

Du Pisani’s story is one of resilience, courage and the power of following your passion even when life seems uncertain.

In the face of loss and hardship, she chose not to give up but instead to create something meaningful not just for herself but for everyone around her.

As she puts it: “Life will throw challenges your way, it’s inevitable. But you have a choice: you can let them hold you back or use them as stepping stones to build something better. For me, starting this business was the best decision I’ve ever made.”
