New vet on the block

Erasmus believes in making veterinary visits as stress-free as possible for pets and their families.

For the new full-time vet at Bokkiepark Animal Clinic, Dr Brenda Erasmus, the most rewarding part of her job is being able to help pets and their owners.

She will strive to follow in the footsteps of Dr Riaan Tolken, who built the clinic 30 years ago and died in September.
Erasmus said she has always loved animals and wanted to be a veterinarian from a very young age.

“There is a deep connection between animals and their owners, which enhances life greatly. I have always felt that animals are therapeutic, and by helping pets, I can also help their owners,” said Erasmus.
The Boksburg Advertiser found out more about the multi-talented vet and her plans for the veterinary field.

You’ve been working on both the West and East Rand for over 11 years. How has your experience in these areas influenced your approach to veterinary care?
My years of experience have made me realise that most pet owners see their pets as part of their family, just like I do. I believe in making veterinary visits as stress-free as possible for pets and their families. I also believe that educating pet owners about pet care is an essential part of improving animal welfare.

As a proud pet parent to four cats and one dog, how does your personal experience as a pet owner shape your professional approach?
As a pet parent myself, I understand how it feels when a pet is sick—the feeling of wishing they could just speak to us and tell us what is wrong. I know the joy they bring into each of our lives and also the pain of having to say goodbye when it’s time. My pets have shown me over and over again that each pet has its own personality, and kindness and compassion go a long way in reducing their stress during vet visits.

Can you elaborate on what Dr Riaan Tolken’s work meant to you and how you plan to carry that forward?
Dr Tolken built a beautiful clinic with excellent boarding facilities and a grooming parlour attached. As a veterinarian who provided excellent pet care in the community for 30 years, he is an inspiration. I hope to be successful in following in his footsteps.

Are there any community projects that you or the clinic are involved in?
We have a donations bin at the clinic where people are welcome to come and donate pet-related articles for local animal shelters. I also want to look into the possibility of improving education about pet care in the local community.

A few interesting personal facts?
I am an artist, writer, and photographer in my free time and some of my work will be on sale from time to time at Bokkiepark Animal Clinic as part of fundraisers for local animal shelters.
