After 26 years in Ladysmith, Brenda and her husband, Norman, returned to Boksburg about 10 years ago, where their journey at the club began.
“Our family had moved from the East Rand to Ladysmith when my husband took a transfer to manage a factory.
“During our time there, I became involved in various charity organisations and community clubs. I served as chairperson of the Old Age Home for many years, was president of the Women’s Association (WA), and played an active role as an elder in the Ladysmith Methodist Church.”
When the couple moved back to Boksburg, they received an invitation to join the ERSC.
“It was a wonderful way for us to reconnect with the community and meet new people after returning to the East Rand,” Brenda said.
Brenda’s involvement in ERSC grew over time.
“After a few years, we joined the committee to become more involved in the club. When our previous club president, Gordon Morris, faced health challenges, they voted me in as president about five years ago.
“I enjoy planning and organising events, and it keeps me happily busy,” she says.
Brenda said the club faces a few challenges. They are a fun, friendly, and laid-back group that enjoys catching up and socialising.
“If I had to pick one challenge, it would be continually finding fresh and engaging speakers to keep our meetings interesting.”
Activities
The East Rand Seniors’ Club has hosted a variety of fascinating guest speakers, providing enriching experiences for its members.
Some highlights include Dr Denise Bjorkman who spoke about several high-profile criminal cases she has consulted on, Dean Cloete a biokineticist who shared insights into maintaining physical health and Sue from Joy Dogs who brought her Old English sheepdogs, offering a delightful experience for pet lovers.
Goals
Looking ahead, Brenda’s vision for the club remains clear: “My goal is to keep it thriving with fun and exciting events, creating a welcoming space for people to socialise.
“It is also a fantastic place for newcomers to the area and retirees who settle into the next chapter of their lives.”
How to get involved
The club is open to all seniors who want to connect with others and enjoy great company.
The club established over a decade ago, meets at the Boksburg Central Methodist Church every third Thursday of the month at 10:00.
