FOLLOW UP: Local market gives teen crafters a platform to boost their business

With a flair for art and a heart for business, these young crafters are redefining what it means to be a teen entrepreneur.

After recently reading about two young crafters in the Boksburg Advertiser, Janine Richardson, organiser of the Bokkie Park market and car boot sale, felt inspired to take action.

She immediately reached out to Jemma (15) and Skyla Smith (13), the creative duo behind Harmony Crafters- Home of Woven & Fresh, offering them a free stall at her monthly market.
Jemma and Skyla started their handmade brand in 2023 and their offerings range from custom sketches, paintings and woven décor to crocheted plushies, bracelets and colourful 3D-printed art.

What began as a hobby has grown into a local business, drawing attention with its quality, creativity and heart.
“When I saw what these girls were doing, I was blown away. We’re always looking for authentic, handmade goods and to see this level of talent from such young people is rare and worth supporting,” Janine said.

Typically, stall space at the market costs R240, but Janine waived the fee after learning they were school learners making everything by hand.
“If a scholar is producing and selling their own crafts, we always try to accommodate them for free. Markets should be places where young talent can thrive. My mother, Joan Gould, and I have been running markets for 25 years and supporting youth has always been important to us.”

The sisters have since become regulars at the monthly Bokkie Park market and their cheerful stall, vibrant designs and friendly service have made them a hit with visitors.
“We’ve learned so much from selling and talking to customers to believing in our work,” said the sisters.

Their mother, Tina Smith, expressed her gratitude to Janine.
