Alan Woodrow Retirement Village holds first post-pandemic market day

Joy, laughter, and purpose returned to Alan Woodrow Retirement Village as the community gathered for its first Market Day since the pandemic.

After years of quiet hallways and strict visitation protocols, Alan Woodrow Retirement Village came to life on May 31 with the vibrant sounds of laughter, music, and community spirit.

The much-anticipated return of the village’s Market Day marked its first since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The funds raised during market day will go directly toward improving facilities and services for the residents.

Organisers said the money will help upgrade essential amenities, provide additional recreational activities, and support the general well-being of the seniors who call the village home.
“The support was overwhelming,” said Maria Cloete, one of the key organisers of the event.
“It was emotional seeing so many familiar and new faces showing up to support our elderly. After the isolation and challenges our seniors faced during the pandemic, this day meant so much.”

Cloete noted that the market is more than just a fundraising opportunity; it’s a reminder of the value and dignity of the older generation. She emphasised that the event will continue as an annual tradition.
“It’s not just about the money. It’s about connection. Our seniors need to be seen, heard, and cherished. They have wisdom and stories that can enrich all of us.”

Cloete also referenced the growing movement known as Go Turquoise for the Elderly (May 15 to June 15), a campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the treatment and rights of senior citizens. The campaign urges communities to embrace compassion, respect, and proactive care for the elderly.

“We’re proudly supporting the Go Turquoise initiative. It’s a simple but powerful message: treat the elderly with the same respect and patience you would want for yourself or your loved ones. At Alan Woodrow, that’s our commitment.”
