Reiger Park police, residents, and local pastors have joined forces to combat gangsterism through a series of community engagements earlier this month.
The meetings, held on August 4, 6, and 10 at a local church, brought together SAPS members, faith leaders, and residents in an effort to address violent crime and restore peace.
Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Constable Johannes Msimanga said the August 4 community imbizo gave residents a platform to raise concerns and propose solutions. Station commander Lieutenant Colonel Lionel Chetty led the session alongside sector commanders, the Crime Intelligence Management and Analysis Centre, and the Social Crime Prevention Unit.
“The main focus was on gangsterism and murder cases in the precinct. We wanted the community to have a space to speak openly about these problems and work with police to find solutions,” Msimanga said.

Residents flagged three main concerns:
• A lack of sports activities in schools, contributing to gang recruitment at a young age.
• Parents failing to discipline children.
• Disunity among pastors, who could instead form moral support groups.
Community commitments
Msimanga said residents pledged to share information on murder suspects, assist with patrols, divide sectors into smaller policing blocks, involve youth in crime-fighting projects, and run regular awareness campaigns. Parents were also urged not to cover up their children’s wrongdoing.
On August 6, SAPS met with pastors to discuss ways faith leaders could help fight gangsterism and drug abuse. Two rival gangs present at the meeting indicated they wanted to make peace.
Peace agreement
The breakthrough came on August 10, when police, crime intelligence officers, and pastors gathered with members of both gangs.
“In a symbolic gesture, the rival groups shook hands and agreed to stop hostilities,” Msimanga said. “It was a powerful moment that showed real change is possible when we work together. We hope this gesture signals a genuine commitment to peace.”
“Gangsterism has long been a challenge in Reiger Park, but police and community leaders hope the new spirit of cooperation will bring lasting change.
