Reiger Park SAPS hosts its first community crime imbizo for the year

The station commander used the platform to encourage residents to report crime and suspicious activities.

Residents of Reiger Park gathered at the Reiger Park Civic Centre on January 18 for the first crime imbizo of the year, aimed at fostering dialogue between residents and local law enforcement.

The meeting, attended by about 70 people, brought together community members, CPF executive members, Reiger Park SAPS management, ward councillors, representatives from the MEC’s office and faith-based leaders.

According to police spokesperson Johannes Msimanga, the community was excited to meet the new station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Lionel Chetty.

He assured them that they would receive the quality service they deserve and emphasised that his office is always open for assistance.

The station commander used the platform to encourage residents to report crime and suspicious activities.
Chetty said they should allow his appointment to make a difference in the area.

“For that to happen, I need you to meet me halfway so we can fight this pandemic called crime – a problem that doesn’t see colour, gender, age or race.”

Vehicles
Residents raised several concerns during the session, including the availability of police vehicles.

Addressing this issue, Chetty acknowledged he is aware of the challenges with SAPS vehicles.

“Many are in for mechanical repairs, but I will do my best to ensure that operational vehicles are available so that the community gets the service it deserves.”

He highlighted his efforts to engage directly with residents across different areas within Reiger Park.

“I’ve already started meeting with communities in the area, including Ramaphosa. I want you to know that my door is always open if there’s anything related to crime that you need to discuss.”

The imbizo was described as a platform to recruit patrollers, Youth Desk members and sub-forum volunteers while encouraging greater participation in CPF activities.

Chetty emphasised the importance of collaboration between SAPS, community members and other stakeholders in creating a safer environment.

“Together, we can change the situation in Reiger Park. Concerns are noted and will be addressed.”
