CBC Boksburg shine in debating league

The CBC Boksburg debate team’s success in August 2025 has earned them a place in the JEDL final and qualification for the National Debating League Championship.

CBC Boksburg debating team has made waves in the Johannesburg East Debating League (JEDL), with excellent performances on August 7, which secured them a place in the league final on September 8 at Roedean School.

Their consistency throughout the season has also guaranteed them a spot at the National Debating League (NDL) Championship in Durban from October 6–8, where they will compete against the top debating schools in the country.

Marketing manager of the school, Nikita Teixeira, said after placing third overall in the six JEDL league rounds earlier this year, CBC advanced to the knockout stages with confidence.
“Umnoto Mlaba was named Best Speaker, an achievement Nikita described as a well-earned recognition of both his talent and preparation.

“Our boys showed incredible determination and teamwork in the quarterfinals. Every point they made reflected not just their debating skills but also their discipline and focus. Umnoto’s award was the icing on the cake.”

Later that same day, CBC faced St Dunstan’s College in the semifinals and managed to deliver a persuasive performance, winning convincingly.
“The semifinal and quarterfinal team included Bongani Thwala, Umnoto Mlaba, Luke Chellan, and Mixo Pitsi, supported throughout the season by Liam Drummond and Silvano da Silva.
“Every member contributed to the success. Their preparation, research, and moral support were crucial.”
