Local learners take hospitality dreams global
The students are set for international internships in Switzerland, the USA, and New Orleans, showing hard work really pays off.
Three former learners from Oosrand SOS in Reiger Park are getting ready to take the world by storm, thanks to fully funded scholarships from the Peermont Community Benefit Trust (PCBT).
Every year, the PCBT, together with the Peermont Education Trust (PET) and supported by Emperors Palace, gives deserving Ekurhuleni youngsters the chance to pursue tertiary education and make their dreams a reality.
Michaella de Klerk, Kateline Visser, and Sisipho Duku have excelled in their Bachelor of Hospitality Management studies at the Swiss Hotel School in Johannesburg since receiving their scholarships in 2024. Their hard work and dedication have earned them international internship opportunities that will see them gain invaluable experience abroad.
De Klerk is among only five students selected from the Swiss Hotel School for a prestigious four-month internship in Switzerland. She will leave OR Tambo International Airport on November 30 and return on April 1 next year.
“I believe there is nothing more rewarding than working hard and seeing the results of your efforts.
“My principal used to tell us, ‘Pay now, play later,’ and that really motivates me every day. The PCBT has given me exceptional support, a strong foundation to succeed, and even funds for my first month in Switzerland.”

Sisipho Duku will start a six-month internship at The Charles Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts, on 6 October, working in the Food and Beverage department.
“This is my first time leaving South Africa, and I couldn’t be more excited. This opportunity will help me grow my career, expand my professional network, and gain global experience in hospitality. I’m extremely grateful to the PCBT for believing in me and giving me this once-in-a-lifetime chance,” she said.
Kateline Visser will head to New Orleans to work at Brennan’s Restaurant in the French Quarter for six months, from October 2025 to April 2026.
“I’ve never left South Africa before, and while I don’t know exactly what to expect, I’m thrilled. This will give me practical work experience at a renowned restaurant, and I’ll get to explore a new city, culture, and way of life. I am so thankful to the PCBT for making this possible,” she said.
The Trust is covering flights, visas, placement fees, and initial living costs for all three students.
Pieter Arendse, the principal of Oosrand, expressed pride and joy in the former learners. “We are proud of them and we wish them all the best.”
