Urban Ruins to launch project to offer hope for elderly living alone
The Urban Ruins NPO is planning to give elderly residents living alone a safe, warm place to live while encouraging community sponsorships to enhance their care.
Urban Ruins NPO is set to launch a new initiative aimed at supporting elderly residents living alone in and around Boksburg.
According to Clayton Viljoen of Urban Ruins, the project will convert a rented house into a communal home where seniors can live together, share meals, and support one another.
“The house will have three bedrooms, with two pensioners sharing each room. Residents will contribute part of their pension to cover accommodation and meals,” he explained.
“Many seniors struggle on a government pension, with retirement homes out of reach and monthly expenses consuming nearly all their income. This leaves them isolated, vulnerable, and without proper housing or meals,” Viljoen added.

He emphasised that the initiative is about giving back to seniors.
“They deserve more than just to survive. They deserve dignity, care, and a home where they are valued.”
A dedicated house manager will oversee daily operations, prepare wholesome meals, and ensure residents are cared for, while local volunteers provide additional support.
The NPO is inviting businesses and individuals to sponsor a room for about R2 000 a month. Sponsorships will help provide better meals, Wi-Fi, medical support, and an improved standard of living for residents.
Viljoen said that if successful, the initiative could expand into a network of assisted living homes, offering seniors safe, affordable housing with a sense of community.
