SAPS crack down on crime in Reiger Park

Operation Shanela II, targeting illegal activities, drugs and contact crimes, brought several people to book.

Ekurhuleni police arrested 234 people during Operation Shanela in Reiger Park on September 24 and 25.

According to Ekurhuleni SAPS district spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, officers arrested 173 people while tracing offenders across the district.
“The main operation, done simultaneously in Reiger Park and Tokoza, yielded 62 additional arrests, including 36 illegal immigrants.

“Law enforcement issued 74 traffic fines totalling R31 200, impounded 10 vehicles and shut down six illegal shebeens. Arrests were made for serious offences, such as attempted murder, drug dealing and possession of illicit cigarettes and a dangerous weapon (replica firearm).”

Police officers during the Reiger Park operation engage with community members to raise awareness about crime prevention.

Sekgobela said among those detectives arrested, 110 were linked to contact crimes, 10 to contact-related crimes, 47 to other serious crimes, six to property crimes and 23 to GBV.

“In a parallel operation, SAPS Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence arrested five people for drug dealing, one for possession of stolen property (copper cables) and one for dealing in dagga. The operations were complemented by door-to-door crime awareness campaigns and community imbizos, aimed at educating residents and addressing their concerns about crime.”

Brigadier Lebohang Machakela, the deputy district commissioner, praised law enforcement and community members for their roles in fighting crime, describing the operation as a “successful example of collaboration between police and the community”.
