Boksburg karateka strikes gold at championships

Dedication and discipline paid off for the Chu Jin International Karate Gauteng as they raked in the medals at the South African Champions.

The Chu Jin International Karate Gauteng dojo, based in Boksburg and led by Renshi Nolan Basson, made an impressive mark at the recent South African Karate Championships in Bloemfontein, bringing home 25 medals from a team of 15 students.

The national event drew dojos from across South Africa, but for most of Basson’s students, it was their first-ever national competition. Despite their nerves, the young karatekas displayed both discipline and determination, competing fiercely in kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) categories.

“This is a huge achievement for our dojo compared to where we started back in 2017. We are proud of all our students who participated, showing bravery and determination as well as respect for authority,” said Basson.

He also added that it takes strength and courage to face your opponent and still keep going whilst maintaining patience and control.

“It highlights why discipline is one of the key factors in karate and martial arts in general.”

Their strong performance did not go unnoticed. The team was commended for its high standards and sportsmanship by Soke Elias Jacobs, founder of Chu Jin, and Hanshi Dave Millar, both senior figures in the martial arts fraternity.

Basson emphasised that karate’s lessons extend far beyond the dojo.

“If a student is determined, shows respect and perseveres, they’ll achieve their goals, not only in karate but in every part of life,” Basson said.

Basson also credited the dedicated coaching team, Sempai Nolicia Basson and Khalid Peer, for their support and guidance.

The dojo expressed gratitude to all who supported the competitors throughout their journey.

“Let’s keep the Chu Jin Gauteng flag flying high. No limits,” said Basson.
